kosa kupala

The sun is at its peak, energizing the spirits.

They explode into the forest, coax young maidens into its darkest crevasses.

The women are looking for mythical blooming ferns – it’s said their red florets hold world secrets.
Men follow them into the forest, provoked by Kupalo, the God of Love and Power.
This evening is Kupalo’s death. The men will burn him, the women will dance.
They stay in the forest until three days pass when they will emerge,
red dripping from the corners of their mouths.
